According to "The History of Summers County West Virginia 1984":
William lived in Mercer, Wyoming and Summers Counties. According to
this history, William and Julina Lilly had twelve children: Albert,
Johnson, Arminta, Margaret, Rosabelle, William, Robert, Isaac, Eanon,
Virginia, Louanna, and Aden.
At the age of 35, William enlisted in the Confederate Army at
Princeton. He was a private in Company I, 6th Regiment, Virginia
Infantry, serving under Captain George, 1863-1865. He is described as
light hair, blue eyes, 5 feet, 9 inches tall. In the latter part of t he
war, he heard that a member of his family was very ill, and went AWOL t o
check on his family. He was caught and imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio
until the war ended.

William Blane Basham was born April 5, 1828, then in Giles County, Virg inia -- now Summers County, West Virginia. He enlisted in the Confedera te States Army in 1861, and served in General McCausland''s Brigade unde r Captain George. William was a brave soldier, and fought in many battl es of the Civil War, 1861-1865. He was married three times. His first w ife was Margaret Peters, his second Julina Lilly, and his third, Bettie C ooper. There were no children of the third marriage. Uncle Billy was an e xcellent farmer, having farmed in Mercer, Summers, and Wyoming Counties o f West Virginia. He had a large farm on Ellison Ridge which included th e Panther Knob. He was honest, patriotic, and a loyal citizen. He died A ugust 20, 1914, at the age of eighty-six years.
